Artist Statement

We take the act of seeing, the „gaze“ for granted as an ordinary, physical ability. Women and sometimes men and actors put make-up on their eyes to make them more expressive and to enhance non-verbal communication. Western aestheticism associates wide-open, big eyes with beauty without actually valuing the content of what the “gaze” is expressing. Jacque Lacan talks about the dynamics of the “Gaze”. He calls the eyes’ function the „seeing eye“ and maintains that they possess a blind spot. According to him eyes understand instantly, whereby the message they convey is received intuitively. The space between the seeing persons is thereby doubled, yet in reality there is no real space, only a verbal construction that is experienced in three dimensions according to the laws of geometry. In my work I have tried to convey images that capture my attention, although I am not aware at the time of why I chose these images and not others. My “Gaze” is voyeuristic as it excludes the “Other Eyes” and I try to be as objective as possible, i.e. without interpreting what I am seeing. However on later and closer inspection I realise that my images convey an unexpected, intuitive interpretation revealing a subjective and critical judgement of what I was seeing.
