Crisscrossing between disciplines is my modus vivendi ever since; pushing against the limits and blurring acceptable divisions between the performative and the visual arts engages me especially. I’m committed to creating work in a distinctively undisciplined* way. I intentionally rebel against the binary thinking around art which results in a kind of professional schizophrenia. I am traditionally educated in one field and autodidact in the other, work with contrasting sets of skills and knowledge, show to different crowds in various types of venues responding to inconsistent expectations. Inhabiting this multiplicity is an asset: it allows me to smuggle skills and knowledge from one area into the other, to insist on experimentation and the constant questioning of orthodox forms. But more than anything else it saves me from conformity and boredom. Regardless in what discipline my work takes form I’m devoted to a sisyphic endeavour to search and capture an inner sense of truth or realness that results mostly in abstract minimalistic paintings and text based performances. * The term undisciplined in the arts is coined by Professor Irit Rogoff; a theorist, curator and teacher at Goldsmiths, University of London. She advocates for art as an undisciplined practice that takes place in a productive zone of dis-identification: becoming a way of expanding knowledge and developing new ways of thinking and doing that stands against the agenda of the neoliberal cognitive capitalism and the marketing-oriented art world. © pic by Mirjam Bajtala
