Artist Statement

Ana Loureiro (Portugal, 1991) is a visual artist. She studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto University and attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna during her graduation semester at the Figurative painting class taught by the professor Silke Otto-Knapp. Her artistic practice focuses on the relationship between spaces and their associated memories left behind by those who inhabited, occupied or transformed them. Initially, the works produced were the outcome of the reflection on the memories embedded in the places where the artist lived. Subsequently, they incorporated external participation, giving rise to the project "Substratum of memories", developed during 2021. In the same year, the project was awarded with a state grant for the Fine Arts by the BMWKMS. In the meanwhile, the artist started to approach in her artworks subjects related to the complexity of communication and consequently presents in her exhibitions the creation of hybrid systems combining an extensive range of communication typologies, with a particular emphasis on visual communication. In 2023, was selected by Emerge association jury to integrate the Portuguese emerging artists 2023 publication (PEA2023). Between January and April 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at the Helsinki International Artist Programme – based at the Cable Factory – as part of the BMWKMS Auslandatelierprogramm. As a result of her participation in the residency programme and inspired by the iconic building of the former Nokia cable factory, the project "Personalized Archive Network" emerged. The project focuses on the artistic research of public or private buildings that were constructed to serve a specific purpose which over the course of their long existence, have undergone multiple transformations until becoming what they are today: centres for artistic communities. The first group of artworks of her series “Tell me how was your day?” is part of Vienna Museum collection. Her projects have been presented in several individual and collective exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, Belgium, Italy, Portugal and USA.
